NDI Medical Smart Surface: Clean by Design
The aim of developing this new implant surface was the promotion of the quality to receive reliable technical results.

Reliable technical results means to support the osseointegration in clinical use of these implants.

Target surface roughness was Sa > 1-2 microns – Moderate roughness.

A moderate roughness takes care of a good relation between period of osseointegration and load capability oft he integrated implant. (Less rough surfaces have a reduced load capability. Higher surface roughness needs a elongated period for osseointegration).

Production process:
Circon oxyd beds from Shot peening process taking care for a homogenous conditioning process of the implant surface.

Shoot peening procedure doesn´t influence the geometrie of the titanium parts (conventional blasting procedure with Alumina oxyd takes material significantly of the blanks and manipulates measures in an uncontrolled way).

No residuals of process media after shoot peening process means also, no residuals after etching process. So „Shot peening process" means „Clean by design" without distrubing effects.

Clinical effects:
Moderately rough surfaces (Sa > 1-2 microns) show stronger bone responses than rough surfaces (Sa > 2 microns), or less rough surfaces (Sa < 1 microns).
